Competitor and industry research: Demographic data

National and provincial governments, and private organisations are excellent sources of demographic information. On the nation level, the Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) has details from the last South African census – extremely useful for viewing your regional market. Almost every province publishes their own census tracts - population density and distribution figures. These show you the number of people living in specific areas such as municipalities, suburbs, and districs. In most cases, this information is readily available online.

Also contact your local chamber of commerce or economic development authority. Since they are looking to encourage businesses to locate in their areas, they can provide you with information on population trends, payroll statistics, income characteristics, etc. Utilities and banks may also have this kind of information available.

  • Statistics South Africa: Stats SA provides statistical information related to various topics in South Africa. It aims to deliver "The South Africa I know, the home I understand" by leading and partnering in statistical systems for evidence-based decisions.
  • South African Institute of Race Relations: The IRR is an advocacy organisation that fights for individuals' rights to make decisions about their lives, family, and business, free from unnecessary government, political, and bureaucratic interference. It was established in 1929 and has remained true to its founding principles.
  • Centre for Risk Analysis: The CRA provides its users with a complete spectrum of strategic intelligence reports, briefings, polls, scenarios, and bespoke advisory services on South Africa's rapidly evolving economic, social, policy and political climate.
